Derbyshire and Peak District Photographs
|
Landscape Photographs from around Padley Gorge, Surprise view and Lawrence Field near Hathersage in Derbyshire and the Peak District Longshaw Estate in Derbyshire and the Peak District National Park comprises around 1600 acres of woodland, grassland, farmland and moorland owned and maintained by the National Trust. It is part of a much larger estate once owned by the dukes of Rutland which was sold and broken up in 1927.
Padley Gorge is part of the Longshaw Estate and is one of the finest remaining examples of the oak and birch woodland once characteristic of the edges and valley sides of the Dark Peak. The woodland mainly consists of sessile oak and birch with alder along the stream running through the center. Holly and rowan are scattered throughout the remainder of the wood.
Some beautiful countryside in this part of North Derbyshire and the Peak District. Surprise view car park is situated on the main Sheffield to Hathersage road with Lawrence Field lying just below the car park. Millstone Edge and Padley Gorge can be reached from here and a short distance away is Stanage Edge. Read more on the area at Hathersage on Derbyshire UK
There are many hundreds of abandoned millstones scattered around north Derbyshire and the Peak District, many lying below Stanage Edge, Millstone Edge and around Bole Hill Quarry which was used to provide stone for the building of the Derwent Valley dams. These millstones are from the Bole Hill area.
